Regalia is required to participate in Commencement and is different for bachelors, masters and doctoral candidates. All degree recipients from Columbia University and its affiliated institutions wear a cap and gown. Doctoral recipients also wear a hood indicating the degree earned.
BACHELORS AND MASTERS DEGREE RECIPIENTS
Bachelors and masters degree recipients wear a gown with a mortarboard (cap) and tassel. No hood is worn. Bachelors and masters regalia will be available for purchase at the Columbia University Bookstore beginning March 11th, 2014.
DOCTORAL DEGREE RECIPIENTS
Doctoral recipients wear a gown, hood and velvet tam (cap). All three components are required in order to walk in all commencement ceremonies.
Orders for rental doctoral regalia may be submitted at any time. Late fees will apply to rental regalia orders placed after March 31st, 2014.
Orders for custom purchase doctoral regalia take 5 weeks for delivery. The last day to order custom regalia with guaranteed delivery by Commencement is April 14th, 2014.
FACULTY AND STAFF
For faculty and staff participating or volunteering in Commencement, please contact your Department Faculty Administrator first for instructions on ordering rental regalia. For individuals whose regalia cost is not covered by the department, please contact email@example.com for ordering information.
Doctoral tams (caps) are not available for rent due to health considerations. For additional doctoral options, please view the doctoral order form below.
We can also provide custom doctoral regalia for those that earned their degrees from institutions other than Columbia. As pricing does vary, please call the Columbia University Bookstore's Regalia Hotline at 212-854-6145 for more information.
